How to Use Your Ankle Machine (Kinetec Breva)

Recovering from ankle surgery or injury takes patience — but the right equipment makes the process smoother and safer.
The Kinetec Breva Continuous Passive Motion (CPM) machine helps restore movement by gently flexing and extending the ankle and rear foot through a controlled range of motion.

Here’s how to use your Kinetec Breva correctly for a comfortable and effective recovery.


Before You Begin

  • Always use your Breva exactly as prescribed by your surgeon or physical therapist.
  • Place the unit on a stable surface, ensure cables are connected securely, and plug into a grounded outlet.
  • Sit or lie in a comfortable position with your foot properly aligned in the device cradle.
  • Keep the remote control within reach — you’ll use it to set limits and start sessions.

Step 1 — Get to Know the RemoteThe handheld remote features four key buttons:

  • Left (Extension)
  • Right (Flexion)
  • Up (+)
  • Down (–)

Step 2 — Set Plantar Flexion (Downward Movement)

  1. Press the Left Limit button.
    • The PL/Flex indicator will blink — you’re now adjusting plantar-flexion.
  2. Use the + / – buttons to set your desired degree, up to a maximum of –40 degrees.
  3. Press the Left Limit button again to confirm.

CityDME Tip: Begin with the range your provider recommends. Too much motion too early can slow recovery.


Step 3 — Set Dorsal Flexion (Upward Movement)

  1. Press the Right Limit button.
    • The Dor/Flex indicator will blink.
  2. Adjust using the + / – buttons up to a maximum of 30 degrees.
  3. Press Right Limit again to save.

Step 4 — Start the ExerciseAfter both flexion limits are set, press Start.
The Breva will smoothly move your ankle through the programmed range of motion.
Relax and allow the device to guide your foot — this is passive motion, so no effort is required from you.


Step 5 — Progress GraduallyFollowing your doctor’s instructions, increase the flexion range by about 5 degrees every 2–3 days.
Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to make these adjustments.Steady progress builds strength and mobility safely.
